Can I use newspaper as a bedding for my guinea pig?

All the bedding I've tried is kinda expensive. The only thing I can get when I need it is Carefresh. My local Walmart doesn't carry Aspen, and I refuse to use pine or cedar. I have plenty of newspaper in my laundry room, and I was wondering, could I use that? Is there anything else I would have to do to the paper? If anyone else does/has done this, please tell me how it works/worked for you. Thanks. :)
